When the restoration of South Farm began in 1974 the site was a blank canvas of arable fields with only the single horse chestnut tree in front of the house. Since then a constantly evolving planting and landscaping programme has created the beautiful formal gardens which are available for guests and visitors to enjoy. Beyond the formal gardens the 8 acre farm provides the house and kitchen with fresh fruit, herbs, vegetables, honey, eggs and meat.
The formal gardens provide colour and interest through the year from the earliest spring bulbs to the fiery reds and oranges of the autumn and winter shrubs and trees. Visitors can follow grass pathways through the winter garden under the living willow arches to the farther reaches of the pond and water garden or relax on the lawn or sun terrace. Formal herb and vegetable gardens follow through from the sun terrace and lead to the farm beyond.
South Farm is a vibrant working farm which produces a rich variety of seasonal vegetables, fruit, herbs, eggs, honey and meat. The farm is a tapestry of orchards, vegetable fields, grazing paddocks, herb beds, greenhouses and protected cropping areas. Using organic principles the farm is proud to produce a diverse range of fresh produce for each event.
The new arboretum which stretches across the whole farm underlines how well the gardens and farm link to not only the beautiful old buildings and barns but also the surrounding countryside. The landscape design allows a seamless flow from one part of the estate to the next and at every turn visitors and guests experience the unique and charming spirit of South Farm.
